Over a hundred thousand Americans, mostly Black and multi-racial, have sickle cell disease. While most can’t find a life-saving bone marrow or blood stem cell match, Gift of Life Marrow Registry works to change this. The non-profit facilitates stem cell and bone marrow transplants and encourages African-American, Caribbean and bi-racial people to join the effort. Its “Blood Is Thicker” campaign states everyone has the power to save a life with a simple cheek swab. Healthy volunteer donors, eighteen to thirty-five, can register.
